I'm using a GIS software with bitmap symbols for installations (irrigation and infrastructure symbols) The symbols have transparent background in the program when I use 256 colour(BMP). When I try printing the map I lose the transparancy for all the symbols, they occure black on the PDF file....

   I am not sure why you are losing the transparency. Does it print properly on a regular (physical) printer? Unfortunately, I do not have the program you are referring to. Can you give me a link?

   I tried to duplicate the problem: I took a GIF picture (with transparency) and pasted it into a Powerpoint file. I placed a grey box in the background, and created a PDF (See screenshot below). The transparency worked as expected (I can see the light grey box underneath). I was wondering: are there any settings in the program you are using that refers the transparency?
