Topic: Change preview reader? Posted: 09 Apr 14 at 11:14AM |
I'm migrating from an XP computer to a new one running Windows 7. When I click on the preview window on the XP machine, the document is opened in Adobe Acrobat (not Reader). But when I click on the preview window on the new Win7 machine, the document is opened in Adobe Reader. I would prefer the preview window to open with Acrobat on the new computer, so is there a way to change the default reader? Both machines associate Acrobat with the pdf file extension. Thanks.

Hi there,
Sure! I believe you need to change the "open" verb with Acrobat. As I recall, in Windows Explorer, in the section where you change your file associations, go into the "details" (might be called "advanced") and there, you can specify which verbs use which programs. Verbs would include commands like "open" and "print". PDF redirect uses these verbs, and Windows decides the default program to use. One more thing: the Adobe PDF Reader might be changing these associations back to itself. Check the Preferences to see if there is a setting for that. I hope that helps, Michel |

Thanks Michel. I appreciate your help. As you have suggested, I've tried making changes to the "open" and other statements associated with the pdf file type but nothing seems to work. (Windows 7 doesn't appear to have a direct way of making those kinds of
changes but a small program called 'Types' provides a way.)
I may have done something wrong but the preview pane still opens pdf documents with Adobe Reader instead of Adobe Acrobat as I would prefer. I have also looked at the preferences settings for Reader and nothing seems to have an affect either. I went back to my XP machine, which previews documents with Acrobat, and checked all the file associations, "open" statements, and Reader preferences. I've adjusted all of the settings on the new Windows 7 computer to match the old one but I still cannot change what program the preview pane opens with. I'll keep searching for a solution. Again, thank you for your suggestions. |

Hi,
I am sorry to hear that it is not working. Have you considered removing PDF Reader, and using Acrobat exclusively? In addition (won't help you right away), I have added the following to my "todo" list: add in the Preferences the ability to specify a custom program to open PDF files (alternative to using the Windows default) Cheers! |

Actually, that is what I ended up doing. After finding no way to change the preview reader I uninstalled Adobe Reader. The result is that the previewer now defaults to Acrobat.
Also, I like your idea of placing an option in the Preferences. Thanks again. |
