Topic: possible to delete a page? Posted: 21 Aug 08 at 2:55PM |
I just installed PDF reDirect and I have two questions:
1) I am particularly interested in the merge feature. Is it possible to delete one or more pages from an existing PDF? I didn't see a way to do this. 2) I was hoping to get rid of Acrobat Reader, which I consider bloatware. But when I open an existing PDF from PDF reDirect, it opens in Acrobat Reader. I tried changing the association in Windows Folder Options but that didn't work. Am I stuck with Acrobat Reader? David |

Hi,
Yes, there is a delete page function - but it is part of the "Pro" version of the software. If you need to use it, you can certainly switch to the Pro version for a few minutes to delete the pages that you need to remove, and then switch back to the Freeware version. You can switch back and forth via the Preferences >> Startup Mode. Since there is nothing to download, the program can switch modes within a few seconds. PDF reDirect uses the default PDF Reader. The command I use is "ShellExecute" which is part of the Windows API, and I do believe that Windows does go through the file association to decide which program to start. In fact, I have my PDF files open the FoxIt Reader, but for grins, I changed it to MS Word, and that worked too (except it just display the raw data). Which version of Windows are you using? When you change the file association, there is a more advanced set of settings, and I had to go in there to ensure that association would "sticK" as opposed to the simpler Windows 2000. I hope that helps. |

Thanks for the reply. I've been using PDFCreator to generate PDF files, but it has a serious problem the developers haven't been willing to acknowledge. Also, PDFCreator relies on Acrobat Reader and doesn't do page deletions.
I have Acrobat 5 (full version) on an old machine (the last version before Adobe decided to turn its products into bloatware), but I no longer have access to the installation CD so I've been using the other machine as needed to do page deletions. What at PIA. I looked at FoxIt yesterday but it's only a reader. I was looking for a single product that can create, read, merge and delete pages. Perhaps Foxit + PDF reDirect Pro is the best solution. |

Hi,
The other option worth investigating is NitroPDF Pro which is a cheaper alternative to Acrobat. Cheers! |
